In a historic announcement made during the state burial ceremony of the late elder statesman, Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, Governor Seyi Makinde has officially declared that The Polytechnic, Ibadan will henceforth be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde made this declaration on Wednesday at the burial proceedings held in honour of the former governor, renowned mathematician, and public intellectual, who passed away recently at the age of 89.

Speaking at the solemn occasion attended by dignitaries, scholars, and political leaders across the country, Governor Makinde described the renaming as a fitting tribute to a man who gave his life to intellectual excellence, public service, and the advancement of Oyo State.

> “Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo was not just a former governor; he was a rare breed—an intellectual giant whose legacy must live on. It is with great honour that I announce, officially, that The Polytechnic Ibadan shall now bear the name Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in everlasting memory of his contributions to education, science, and governance,” Governor Makinde declared.

The announcement was received with loud applause and emotional reactions, as many attendees saw the move as long overdue recognition of Dr. Olunloyo’s impact on the state and nation.

Born in 1935, Dr. Olunloyo was a legendary scholar who made his mark in mathematics and governance, serving as Commissioner for Economic Development and later as Governor of the old Oyo State in the Second Republic.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the legacy of Dr. Olunloyo must serve as a light for future generations, urging students and staff of the newly renamed institution to uphold the values of academic excellence and service that the late icon embodied.

The renaming will be formally gazetted and followed by structural changes to reflect the new identity, according to a statement from the Governor’s Office.

This marks a significant moment in the history of tertiary education in Oyo State, as one of Nigeria’s most respected polytechnics is now indelibly linked to one of its most brilliant sons.
